Model Life: To Boudoir or Not To Boudoir
So here you are, living the “model life”! With so many avenues, which way do you go? Glamour, commercial, fashion, art, Print? Who Knows? Let’s talk Boudoir. Is this a “Model life”? So often one’s mind goes to a place of sex, scandal, eroticism, or nakedness when the word is mentioned. But, does boudoir have anything to do with any of these such words? Well, Wikipedia’s definition of boudoir is: “a woman’s private sitting room or salon in a furnished accommodation, usually between the dining room and the bedroom, but can also refer to a woman’s private bedroom.” Hmmm… sounds like a safe and secure definition…right? Not so fast, let’s look at the definition of boudoir photography,
Wikipedia also states: “boudoir in the 21st Century Boudoir Photography dates from the mid 1980s onwards, and is characterized by the empowerment of its female subjects, who now are typically the photographers direct clients rather than being hired models.” Wait! Was clients mentioned in this? I think I heard clients. This absolutely changes the claim to being a part of the “Model Life.” Or does it? When your route is Boudoir as major images inside your portfolio, who is your target market in the model world? Playboy, Maxim, Pinup? Oh, don’t worry, we’re still safe and secure here. You can read on without putting the children in another room. LOL.
I’ve always viewed modeling as a volcanic eruption of stories that the camera lens must realize to further realize the story to targeted audiences. Boudoir photography and modeling may in this setting travel the woman’s body telling a life story that no one has yet to discover. Could this story assume eroticism, sex appeal, scandal, or nakedness? Yes. But it all depends on the story the lens tell and the viewpoint of each audience member. I see this, you see that. Let’s go back to the word client as opposed to model in our Wikipedia definition. When Wikipedia states that women who utilize Boudoir photography as “clients rather than being hired models”, I am challenged to find out as a model living the “model life”, to boudoir or not to boudoir…Is Boudoir a gateway into the “model life” ? “To Boudoir or not to Boudoir is the question.
